As expected, Apple has just formalized its brand new 14-inch MacBook Pro. It incorporates the new M1 Pro and Max chips, as well as a 120 Hz Mini-LED screen.
In November 2020, Apple updated the two entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro models, making them among the first Macs with an Apple Silicon chip … the famous Apple M1 chip. For a year now, MacBook Air and Pro Apple Silicon and MacBook Pro Intel have coexisted.
With the M1 chip, Apple has started its revolution… very credible. Both MacBooks, the Pro and Air , were identical to their predecessors, but the new ARM chip was a game-changer. It’s simple, Apple offered the best value for money on the market. A real tour de force, despite the entry-level positioning of these two products. They are limited in connection, in RAM… here is the succession.
Apple has formalized the arrival of a new 14.2-inch MacBook that accompanies the redesign of the 16-inch . This “14” is a new diagonal size, between 13 and 16 “. Above all, it introduces the new M1 Max and Pro chips.
NEW PROCESSORS THAT DO IT ALL
Apple did not start its keynote by presenting the new MacBook Pro, but the new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors . Finally, it is rather SoC (System On Chip), these chips integrate CPU, GPU and RAM on a single system brings many advantages. In short, the M1 Pro and M1 Max take the same concept, but they are much bigger.
On this extra surface, Apple has added cores and memory. The Apple M1 Pro therefore has a 10-core CPU (8 fast, 2 economical), Apple announces 70% more performance than the original M1.
The difference between the M1 Pro and M1 Max is in the GPU, with 16 cores on the Pro which offers performance twice as fast as the M1 according to Apple. The M1 Max has 32 . Apple compares performance to GPUs integrated in Intel CPUs, the comparison is obviously very flattering for Apple. You will also be able to configure up to 64 GB of unified RAM , with a memory speed advertised at 400 GB / s.
The integrated SSD is also much faster, Apple announces a reading that goes up to 7.4 Gb / s. This is very good performance for an NVMe SSD, at the level of that of the PS5 .
Apple relies heavily on performance. According to them, this MacBook Pro can edit up to 30 ProRes streams in 4K and even 7 8K streams… which is more than the Mac Pro. Despite the presence of an active cooling system, with fans, Apple promises that these MacBook Pros will not make any noise.
MINI-LED DISPLAY IS THINNER WITH A NOTCH
As expected, the screen takes up more space … with thinner borders. Apple is also introducing a real notch, like the iPhone X. This notch will not offer Face ID, but it hosts a FaceTime HD front camera that films in Full HD with an f / 2.0 aperture (and therefore twice the light). But let’s forget about this notch, which seems pretty well integrated in macOS windows with dark mode. Apple mostly talked about a Liquid Retina XDR display.
The latter is inspired by the Pro Display XDR, with the same Mini-LED technology of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro M1 . This technology makes it possible to have a peak brightness at 1600 nits and around 1000 nits in conventional use. Finally, the Mini-LED also has the advantage of having higher contrasts.
THE REAL MAGSAFE IS BACK
Like the 16.4-inch version, this MacBook requires a lot more power than the MacBook M1. Apple has therefore reintroduced the real MagSafe, the magnetic connector. This connector provides fast charge technology Fast Charge. The company announces 50% battery in 30 minutes. The other connections are very complete, with USB-C Thunderbolt 4 , a headphone port, a full HDMI or even an SDXC slot .

Regarding autonomy, Apple announces 17 hours of autonomy (21 hours for the 16 inches) in mixed use. Effort seems everywhere, including the audio system with six speakers with spatial audio.
As you can see below, the TouchBar is no longer. Apple replaces real physical keys. The power button is still Touch ID compatible for unlocking.
A MESS OF OPTIONS
The base price is 2,249 euros , with the M1 Pro chip, 16 GB of unified RAM and a 512 GB SSD. If you want the M1 Max chip, you will have to add at least 500 euros… up to 730 euros . Same observation for the unified memory, it will be necessary to add 920 euros for 64 GB. The SSD can go up to 8 TB, 2760 euros. You can order it today, deliveries are scheduled for next week.
In addition to the MacBook Pro and the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, the Apple company focused on other new products, such as the new AirPods 3 wireless headphones , a new Apple Music subscription at a discounted price but also new very pop colors attributed to the HomePod mini .
