Without any official announcement, Lenovo introduces the new ThinkPad E14 G4 and ThinkPad E15 G4. Not making an announcement is nothing new for the budget-oriented E-series, which is getting some pretty modest processor updates this year.
Marketing money is a limited resource. The degree of attention paid to each product depends on the manufacturer’s priorities. In the case of Lenovo ThinkPad laptops, the priorities are clear: the very expensive ThinkPad X1 is the subject of huge announcements at CES, while other models do not even receive a press release.
An example: The Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 4 and its 15-inch counterpart, the ThinkPad E15 Gen 4. These new ThinkPad laptops are coming to market without an official announcement. It’s a bit sad, as the Lenovo ThinkPad E series is popular due to its comparatively low price. On the other hand, the new models don’t actually offer many new features.
Compared to the predecessors ThinkPad E14 G3 and ThinkPad E15 G3, the new models are small updates that retain the same 16:9 chassis design. Even the USB 2.0 port is still there – an anachronism in 2022. The only thing new about the E14 Gen 4 and E15 Gen 4 are the processors
But even in this area, Lenovo chooses the smallest possible upgrade by not using AMD Ryzen 6000. Instead of Rembrandt, the new Lenovo notebooks use the Ryzen 5000 processors of the Ryzen 5000 series “Barcelo-U”. This refresh of Cézanne lacks many of the functions that Ryzen 6000 includes, such as USB 4.0 or the much faster RNDA2 GPU. The fastest processor for affordable E-Series ThinkPads is the AMD Ryzen 7 5825U with the slower options Ryzen 5 5625U and optional Ryzen 3 5425U.
