The smartphone sector at € 200, although teeming with references, was sadly stagnant in recent months with a Huawei P8 Lite 2017 whose performance had never been matched. But a newcomer could come to change things: the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus.
Gently but surely, Xiaomi implants on the Old Continent after having aroused our lust for years with its mobile quality / price unbeatable. Officially distributed by Materiel.net and LDLC for some time, the smartphones of the Chinese firm should also arrive very soon in a future French shop . And among the few products sold in France, a future bestseller is already emerging: the Redmi 5 Plus.
The brand\’s first 18: 9 phone, the mobile is, as its name suggests, a larger and better-equipped version of the Redmi 5 . Positioned around € 200, he comes to fight in a hypercompetitive arena where the Huawei P8 Lite 2017reign supreme, but where the pretenders to the throne do not miss, starting with the Honor 9 Lite , Echo Horizon , Wiko View and now this Redmi 5 Plus. Let\’s see what he has in his stomach and if he can pretend to shake the established order.
Attention, if you want to buy this Redmi 5 Plus, prefer French shops rather than third vendors or various marketplace . Many offers list mobiles from the import and not supporting the 800 MHz band. Check that the merchant you have chosen displays compatibility with this 4G band (800 MHz or B # 20).
Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus : Design
The design of the Redmi 5 Plus is not exactly stunning. The Chinese firm has followed all the ergonomic and aesthetic trends of this past year, including the 18: 9 format with emphasis on the “edge to edge” screen, the metal shell and slightly rounded edges. If none of this is very original (we find more or less the same thing on the Redmi Note 4 ), we can not say that it is disappointing so far. The construction is impeccable and the finishes neat. No, really, smartphones at 200 € really do not have to blush in front of the rest of the market, this Xiaomi proves once again.
With its screen almost 6 inches diagonally, it will of course abandon the hope of using the mobile one-handed, although Xiaomi has made an effort to optimize. The screen occupies more than 77% of the front panel, a score that allows it to rank among the good students in this price range. The buttons fall naturally under the fingers, we take the terminal with the left or right hand, and the fingerprint reader has the good taste to be fast, effective and not capricious.
Yes, but there is still a “but”: we are in 2018 and Xiaomi has still not seen fit to USB-C. In place of the reversible and universal connection that is being democratized nicely, we find the aging plug micro-USB. A disappointment that makes here lose some points to the mobile, as well as the lack of any seal certification.
Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus : Screen
We have dedicated Lab analysis on the screen of this Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus . To put it simply, once you have plunged into the settings to adjust two or three small details, this smartphone simply delivers the best results we have ever seen on a mobile at this price.
Once these adjustments are made, the colorimetry is flawless with a mean E delta of 2.2; same thing for the temperature which, at 6,300 K, is very close to the ideal standard of 6,500 K. Side readability, the results are also rather pleasing: the maximum brightness at 548 cd / m² is good, the contrast ratio of 2 000: 1 generous and the minimum brightness of 1.2 cd / m² will not burn the retinas of nocturnal mobile users. Nothing to report either to use: the tactile delay and persistence, measured respectively at 83 and 13 ms, are low enough to ensure good fluidity in use and display.
The Redmi 5 Plus has an excellent 5.9-inch (15 cm) IPS panel. Admittedly, it does not rise to the level of Oled screens, but it defends honorably and has little to reproach itself, if it is perhaps its size that will repel allergic to large formats.
Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus : Performance
With a Snapdragon 625 in its bowels and 3GB of RAM, the Redmi 5 Plus manages to run Android without any hitch. The mobile juggles between all applications without problems and there is no slowdown during daily use. For 95% of uses, the chip Qualcomm is largely sufficient.
In addition to being rather fast, the Redmi 5 Plus also pays the luxury of almost no heat. Whether after long minutes of play or photo capture, the temperature of the mobile never grime beyond 38 ° C. Not enough to grill your fingers or interfere with use.
As for video games, the Adreno 506 graphics chip does a good job and supports most games in the Play Store without any problem. A game like Asphalt Xtreme will require some concessions on the graphics, but it remains very correct, especially as fluidity is at the rendezvous.
Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus : Audio
The headphone output of the Redmi 5 Plus is rather a pleasant surprise. It benefits from a correct output power coupled with almost zero distortion. The sound stage is quite wide, but we would have liked the separation of the channels to be more clearly marked.
The speaker on the lower edge of the mobile also delivers a clean signal without distortion. If (as often) the high mediums are the most emphasized, the Redmi 5 Plus manages to get a little more bass than many other mobiles in its range.
Camera
Recently Xiaomi did not leave us a very good memory side photo. Indeed, the Redmi Note 4 despite all its strengths seemed to have skipped over this point. Fortunately, Xiaomi has taken control and this Redmi 5 Plus delivers much more satisfactory results. In broad daylight, captured shots are rich in detail, enjoy a good contrast and a reproduction of colors in the hair. In these conditions, the mobile is even better than the unstoppable Huawei P8 Lite 2017 . We only regret that there is too much grain in the set, and that the edges of the shot lack of sharpness.
At night, the case is more complex. The Redmi 5 Plus is doing relatively well for a phone in its range and provides a good balance between electronic noise and smoothing, but it still sees a little less than the 2017 P8 Lite. a white balance more approximate, he manages to catch more light than the Xiaomi and allows to see more clearly. The Redmi 5 Plus does not demerit too much, since it manages to keep a fairly natural rendering and restore the outline of the scene.
