What is asked of an office laptop is efficiency in everyday tasks and responsiveness, two elements gathered inside this Acer Aspire A317-51-518X. Equipped with a large 17.3 inch screen, it hides some advantages such as its 10th generation Core i5 processor (Comet Lake) or its fast SSD storage. Productivity enthusiasts in an essentially office use with a little editing are the first targets of this configuration, provided they remain sedentary. Indeed, the plastic case with significant weight (2.7 kg) does not encourage mobility, as its autonomy limited to 4 or 5 hours max. The screen borders are also impressive and the screen basic.

The Acer Aspire A317-51-518X is aesthetically identical to its little brother the Aspire A315-54 if we put aside some subtleties of finish. Thanks to a neat design based on elegant brushed effects imitating metal, the plastic chassis is far from returning a “low-end” image and the whole gains in elegance thanks to a refined silhouette (24 mm). Note also the presence of a numeric keypad in a fairly compact keyboard (probably the same as on the 15 inch). Unsurprisingly, the keyboard is not backlit and the touchpad is clickable but the chassis logically has a maintenance hatch to upgrade the storage (HDD) and the RAM.
Acer has not sought to refine the borders of the screen beyond measure, which returns a somewhat massive appearance. What is more, the definition on this model is basic (1600 x 900 px), which does not lend itself at best to the current display standard even if the step between HD and Full HD is less visible on a 17 inch. On the other hand, the screen is installed on a TN panel with limited angles of approach and the CineCrystal treatment is brilliant, which will reflect the ambient light. Some people find that the glossy screen looks after the design, others find it annoying in use. It depends.
The sides of the case are equipped with connectors that could be described as honest even if the card reader is no longer in the game and the USB Type-C is sidelined. We thus find an HDMI output as well as three USB ports including a USB 3.1. To encourage data transfers, Gigabit Ethernet and the recent Wifi AC module are also part of the game, as well as a Bluetooth 4.2 chip. Note that a DVD burner reader is integrated on the right side, it is quite rare to mention it nowadays.
Performances, autonomy of the Acer Aspire A317-51-518X
Inside the 17 inch, we find a heart powered by a 10th generation (2019) Comet Lake processor , the Core i5-10210U . Thus, the Aspire A317 covers all of current use (web browsing, Office processing, video) with a fairly advanced mastery in more demanding applications using multicore architecture (video editing, light Photoshop … ). Attention, we are on low consumption and not powerful processors type -H. In fact, if you try CPU-intensive tasks, you will face more or less harmful latencies. With 8 GB of RAM behind, the system will not lose fluidity in multitasking for everyday use.
There is no dedicated graphics card for this model, which limits it automatically on the game and graphics jobs a little greedy. Despite everything, the support of the Intel UHD 620 chip integrated in the processor is sufficient for current use and to launch some undemanding titles since it is put at the same level as a dedicated GeForce MX110.
Opposite, the storage is entrusted to an M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD of 256 GB , allowing to bring its share of fluidity to Windows 10 and to the overall execution of the programs, knowing that this is paid for in terms of capacity. If you count the space occupied by the system and by the programs, there is only about 200 GB of free space, enough to accommodate a small part of your toy library. For the rest, you will have to opt for an external or online solution.
Let\’s finish with a word on the autonomy of this Aspire A317-51-518X which is definitely not its strong point. Its small battery does not leave much more than 3 to 4 hours of span in Internet browsing with active Wifi.
