Chassis, connectors, screen of the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55-51QY
It sports a resolutely gamer design with its black frame with angular lines and touches of red.
This gaming laptop PC is cooled by 2 fans including 1 AeroBlade 3D 4th generation as well as heat pipes and air vents.
In terms of connectivity, this computer is well equipped thanks to its wireless Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi ax modules ( more efficient and recent than Wi-Fi ac ) to communicate and connect remotely, its practical HDMI video output for connecting it easily to a TV or monitor for example, its Ethernet and audio ports, its USB-C without forgetting its 3 USB 3.0 (compatible with USB 2.0) guaranteeing transfers that are up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 if USB 3.0 peripherals are connected to it.
We can obviously backlight the keys of the chiclet keyboard, here thanks to a 4-zone RGB solution, which is practical to distinguish them correctly in a poorly light environment.
The screen will be of interest to gamers because it adopts a frequency of 144Hz which enhances fluidity in games compared to the 60Hz standard. Thanks to its IPS technology, the screen has large vertical and horizontal viewing angles. But its colorimetry is classic, lower than that provided by more high-end IPS panels. In any case, thanks to its precise Full HD definition and its 16: 9 format, the screen lends itself well to the display of High Definition content such as videos. Anti-reflective coating, the screen also offers better visibility in a bright environment (eg outdoors) than a shiny panel.
Performance, battery life of the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55-51QY
The Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55-51QY can appeal to those who want to acquire a versatile 15-inch laptop PC performance in games and oriented creation.
It is able to run recent games because it embeds the dedicated high-end NVIDIA Ampere GeForce RTX 3060 high-end graphics card with ray tracing.
In addition, the GeForce RTX 3060 has the advantage of speeding up processing under software that takes advantage of GPU computing power, such as Adobe Premiere / Photoshop or Sony Vegas.
In practice, the GeForce RTX 3060 is activated / deactivated automatically and in real time by NVIDIA Optimus technology, as needed.
Optimus gives maximum preference to the Intel UHD 630 solution integrated into the processor despite its very modest features because it consumes little energy which favors battery life.
In this regard, bet on about 5 hours on battery in light use.
The GeForce RTX 3060 is in fact activated by Optimus to perform graphics processing too heavy for the Intel UHD 630. With one or the other, we can obviously watch photos and videos.
The heart of this computer is up to the task, delivering solid overall performance that can satisfy a maximum number of users. Because it is based on an Intel HM470 chipset, a good amount of 16 GB RAM and a Comet Lake-H Quad Core i5-10300H processor.
In particular, this core guarantees much faster processing than 8 GB DDR4 and a low-consumption processor in areas that consume RAM and CPU resources using multi-cores, such as photo editing, video editing or 3D rendering.
As for storage, Acer has chosen here an SSD which guarantees much better fluidity and responsiveness in games, under processing and more generally on a daily basis than a simple hard drive.
Thanks to the SSD, for example, we get faster on the cards of online games than with a simple hard drive and we take advantage of games / software launches, processing and starts / stops much faster.
With its 512 GB, the SSD offers a capacity in phase with the standard of hard disks. If you need more space, you can rely on an external storage unit. Opting for a USB 3.0 / USB-C device then represents an interesting solution to obtain fast transfers.
Finally, keep in mind that when strongly pushed (eg games, processing), this designer-oriented gamer laptop is heard and heats up.
Nvidia laptop GPU’s vary wildly in performance depending on how much power budget they are afforded. This review omits this critical piece of information, as well as lacks comprehensive benchmarks and thermal performance. Because of this, I honestly cannot recommend this review to anyone interested in this laptop. But it would be great to see this information included in the future.
