Chassis, connectors, screen of Asus VivoBook S17 M712FA-BX842T
With its Transparent Silver light silver frame with ErgoLift hinge that raises it slightly forward when opened, this weight-saving computer for a 17-inch has a sober and elegant design.
This laptop has a good connection including 1 USB 3.1 Type-C, a practical HDMI video output to easily connect it to a TV or a monitor for example, Bluetooth 4.1 wireless modules and Wi-Fi ac to communicate and remotely connect an audio port as well as 3 USBs all compatible with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, USB 3.0 guaranteeing transfers up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 if a USB 3.0 device is plugged into it.
A backlighting system also equips the chiclet keyboard, an appreciable feature at this price level which allows the keys to be clearly distinguished in the event of limited ambient light.
Thanks to its anti-reflective coating, the screen is more readable than a shiny panel in a bright environment (eg outdoors) and less tiring for the eyes in the long run. For the rest, it adopts classic characteristics due to its definition of 1600×900 and its 16: 9 format lending itself well to video playback.
Performance, battery life of Asus VivoBook S17 M712FA-BX842T
The Asus VivoBook S17 M712FA-BX842T is a relatively light 17-inch laptop designed for everyday use.
In this area as in office automation and surfing the Internet, this PC delivers good performance because it is built around a low-consumption Comet Lake Core i3-10110U Turbo processor and a good amount of 8 GB RAM very useful in multitask.
It should be noted in this regard that a Core i3 certainly shows its limits under software that consumes processor resources, but is clearly more efficient than a non-Turbo Core i3 (Core i3-7xxxU and predecessors).
Thanks to the modest Intel UHD 620 graphics part housed within the Core i3 Turbo, you can watch photos and videos on this stylish computer. However, as the Intel UHD 620 is not backed by a dedicated graphics card, this notebook is only suitable for heavy graphics work like gaming.
Storage side, this laptop relies on an SSD. As a reminder, an SSD is silent but also less energy consuming than a hard drive, more resistant to shocks and much faster. In addition here, we take advantage of a 512 GB SSD, a capacity in phase with the standard of hard drives.
As a result, thanks to the SSD, this PC is significantly more responsive and fluid on a daily basis than if it were equipped with a hard drive. This notably implies much faster software launches and starts / stops.
If additional space is needed, a 2.5 inch slot is free to add a second SSD or hard drive. Of course, one can also rely on an external storage unit. Opting for a USB 3.0 device then represents an interesting solution to obtain fast transfers.
As for the autonomy of this computer whose weight is contained for a 17-inch model, expect about 6 hours of battery operation in light use.
