Halfway between the sober Pavilion Power 15-cb and the racy HP Omen 15-this, the new Gaming Pavilion offers a clean aesthetic, far from the consensual. This model in particular (15-cx0017nf) will stand out with green details scattered here and there, while other black versions will be accompanied by a more sober white or a purple backlight (to see if will cross on the French market). The very angular silhouette directly recalls that of the Omen with its protruding edges, its central hinge and its marked angles. The chassis is black plastic (celestial dixit HP) and receives a brushed finish around the keyboard.
The keyboard is backlit with a green glow and highlighted on each key with a green outline, as well as the touchpad. Note also that it extends over the entire width of the base, which implies compaction of the hull. HP has been concerned about the size of its Gaming Pavilion that has lost 13 mm in width, allowing to offer a borderless design on the screen.
Speaking of measurements, the silhouette of the Gaming Pavilion 15-cx0017nf is not compact yet with more than 25 mm thick. But with an optimized weight around 2.16 kg on the scale, it will not be against some moves.
The battery has undergone a cut compared to its predecessors and recovers a very average capacity (52.5 Whr). In fact, the autonomy should not exceed 5 hours in Internet browsing with active Wifi.
With its latest generation architecture, the heart of this PC is the rewarding element in this configuration. And for good reason, the Quad Core i5-8500H Coffee Lake makes a substantial jump in performance compared to its predecessor the Quad i5-7300HQ. In particular, it is able to maintain higher frequencies in Turbo and is even more powerful than a Quad i7-7700HQ in most scenarios. In short, this translates into a perfect support for the versatile use of video editing, 3D rendering, programming or engineering, with significant flexibility in multitasking thanks to 12 GB RAM. Collectors of tabs on the browser will have something to do.
But the primary purpose of the PC remains the game and HP has commissioned for this the GeForce GTX 1050 (4GB GDDR5), a dedicated mid-range graphics card. Thinking of the occasional game, it surpasses in principle the GTX 960M by about 20% and thus allows to play all titles of the moment in Full HD with a level of detail set to “High”. But do not expect to push the details on “Ultra” in Full HD, let alone play in 4K. Note that it is also a valuable support in the exploitation of programs taking advantage of the graphics card to accelerate processing (3D).
For its part, the storage will also play a decisive role in the good results of the PC since it is entrusted to a dedicated SSD 256 GB NVMe PCIe . It significantly enhances the overall system responsiveness on a daily basis by ensuring shortened load times, virtually instantaneous Windows launch and very fast file copies. Only downside, its capacity will quickly prove to be insufficient if you wish to archive heavy files or games. In this case, it is possible to add a hard disk or a second SSD to the 2.5-inch free bay .
Now legion at HP on their mid / high-end PCs, the full HD IPS matte display is a pleasure to see. You enjoy a consistent image with rich colors regardless of your position in front of the screen and a high display density with Full HD (1920 x 1080 px). This definition allows you to fully enjoy your High Definition content and to modulate the positioning of windows without losing legibility. In addition, the matte treatment plays a decisive role if you are installed in a very bright environment, was a barrier to glare.
Finally, the connection may seem a bit limited for a PC game but it is correct for any other use. There is a valuable USB Type-C port (up to 5 Gbps, DP 1.2, HP Boost), an HDMI output, an SD card reader and three other USB 3.1 ports. The connectivity modules include a Gigabit Ethernet port and recent Wifi AC and Bluetooth 4.2 chips. A webcam FHD (1080p) Infrared is also emerging.
