At first glance, the visual identity of this MSI GE73 does not really differ from that of the older generation MSI GE72 (VR). Slightly slimmer by 1 millimeter, it still sports this structured black shell with subtle touches of red and the elegant brushed effect on the back of the screen and around the keyboard. But the apparent sobriety hides on ignition an otherwise more colorful PC with its multicolored LEDs (Mystic Light) that underline the structure of the lid and its keyboard backlit RGBtouch by key. It is immediately less consensual. Note that it shows through the full height and the outline of the key (Silver Lining Print) for more immersion.
MSI always relies heavily on its many built-in technologies that will enrich the gaming experience. It includes a brand new Dragon Center 2.0 interface that allows you to manage the performance of the PC through different profiles of use, the MatrixDisplay system to extend the experience. external two-screen display or the arrival of Cooler Boost 5 which will automatically adjust the speed of the 2 integrated “Whrilwind Blade” fans and 7 heat pipes via 4 air outlets.
As its look suggests, the PC is intended primarily for a public of players. A vocation supported by the GeForce GTX 1060 in its version with 6 GB dedicated , a dedicated high-end graphics card allowing intensive play in Full HD with details set to “High” or “Ultra”. It thus allows to reach 60 fps on the majority of the titles of the moment. Virtual reality is also in its strings while the game in 4K is possible but not in the best conditions.
In addition to its scope of play, the PC shines above all by its performance. Indeed, the arrival of Coffee Lake processors mark a significant increase in power in the laptop sector. In the case of the Hexa Core i7-8750H that equips this MSI GE73 8RE-234, it is never without resources, whatever the mission invoked. And for good reason, it relies on 6 logical cores (against 4 for the i7-7700HQ), which allows it to confront all the missions possible and imaginable, until the most 3D rendering. The 8 GB of RAM provide a good multitasking fluidity .
On the screen side, MSI favors players with a vivacity amplified by the refreshing rate of 120 Hz (3ms) . It effectively eliminates the IPS technology and its wide viewing angles, which can slow down some. Its Full HD (1920 x 1080px) resolution provides high display density and allows you to get the most out of your High Definition content / game and the matte slab prevents ambient light from reflecting on the screen , improving the playing comfort (especially in dark scenes).
The storage provided here is adequate and combines a fast dedicated SSD with a high capacity hard drive. This duo is the pair to ensure a system more reactive – the operating system and most programs and games are installed on the dedicated SSD ( 128 GB ) – while adding a large storage space to house your toy library. The gain provided by the SSD is visible compared to a machine with a hard disk alone, especially since it is generally quieter, more robust and more energy efficient than its cousin.
Finally, the connector reserves as always all the necessary for the players. There is a card reader, two video outputs (HDMI 1.4, mini-DisplayPort) and four USB ports including two USB 3.0, a USB 3.1 (Gen2) and a USB 3.1 Type-C (Gen2) supporting the Thunderbolt 3 . You also enjoy the latest generation of the Bluetooth 5.0 chip, WiFi 802.11 AC and Gigabit Ethernet with BigFoot Gamer Killer E2500 technology to give priority games.
