The visual identity of this new MSI GP63 does not really differ from that of the older generation MSI GP62. We always deal with a case made of polycarbonate and structured black aluminum alloy which totals a reasonable weight of 2.2 kg . It is when we get close that we grab the details: two red accents underline the edges on the back of the lid and a red border surrounds the base. Inside, we discover a Steel Series keyboard with multicolored backlighting that shows through the full height of the keys (Silver Lining Printing).
MSI always relies heavily on its many integrated technologies that will enrich the gaming experience. It includes the Dragon Center 2.0 application that manages the performance of the PC through different profiles of use, the MatrixDisplay system to extend the external two-screen display or the arrival of Cooler Boost 5 which will automatically adjust the speed of the 2 integrated “Whrilwind Blade” fans and 7 heat pipes via 4 air outlets.
Recall that this PC is provided with FreeDos , a utility that does not fully exploit its capabilities. It will therefore be necessary to install a complete operating system such as Linux or Windows to enjoy a perfectly functional environment.
Other than the design, it is the architecture of this MSI GP63 8RE-096X that catches the eye first, including its Quad Core i5-8500H processor of the latest generation Coffee Lake. Highly anticipated since the announcement of Kaby Lake Refresh hinge processors, this CPU is making a quantum leap in performance compared to its predecessor, the Quad i5-7300HQ. In particular, it is able to maintain higher frequencies in Turbo and is even more powerful than a Quad i7-7700HQ in most scenarios. For short, this translates into a supportive management of versatile usagecomposed of video editing, 3D rendering, programming or engineering. A slight gain can also be observed in terms of game quality but this part depends mainly on the graphics card.
As its look suggests, the PC is intended primarily for a public of players. A vocation supported by the GeForce GTX 1060 in its version with 6 GB dedicated , a dedicated high-end graphics card allowing intensive play in Full HD with details set to “High” or “Ultra”. It thus allows to reach 60 fps on the majority of the titles of the moment. Virtual reality is also in its strings while the game in 4K is possible but not in the best conditions.
To support the system, MSI chose to integrate a hybrid storage solution into its PC. This includes a dedicated 256 GB SSD and a 1 TB hard drive at 7200 rpm. The first is intended to house the operating system and all programs and games while the second will take care of the storage of your toy library. This gives you a particularly responsive operation with a reduced response time compared to a solution with a single hard drive, while enjoying a very generous capacity.
On the screen side, MSI favors players with a vivacity amplified by the refreshing rate of 120 Hz (3ms) . It effectively eliminates the IPS technology and its wide viewing angles, which can slow down some. Its Full HD (1920 x 1080px) resolution provides high display density and allows you to get the most out of your High Definition content / game and the matte slab prevents ambient light from reflecting on the screen , improving the playing comfort (especially in dark scenes).
To finish on the connectivity, the balance is very correct as often at MSI. There is an SD card reader, a DVD burner, two video outputs (HDMI 1.4, mini-DisplayPort) and four USB ports including three USB 3.1 and a versatile USB 3.1 Type-C with support Thunderbolt 3 . You also enjoy the latest generation of WiFi 802.11 AC and Bluetooth 5.0 and Gigabit Ethernet with the BigFoot Gamer Killer E2500 technology to give priority games.
