Chassis, connectors, screen of the MSI Modern 14 B11SB-050FR
Robust with its compliance with the American military resistance standard MIL-STD-810G, this thin and light Ultrabook sports an original and discreet elegant design with its light blue Bluestone aluminum frame that rises slightly forward when opened.
The connectivity integrated into this versatile laptop PC is good, consisting of 1 USB-C, wireless Wi-Fi ac and Bluetooth 5.0 modules for remote connections and communications, a useful HDMI video output for easy connection this computer has a TV for example, an audio port but also 2 USB 3.0 guaranteeing transfers up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 if you connect USB 3.0 peripherals.
It is unfortunate, however, that MSI does not use native support for Thunderbolt Tiger Lake processors to provide this connection, and does not offer more recent and efficient Wi-Fi ax than Wi-Fi ac.
Fortunately, the chiclet keyboard can be backlit, a functionality expected at this price level and appreciable for correctly distinguishing the keys in a dimly lit environment.
The screen will be of interest to creatives because it displays colors more faithful than the average with significant vertical and horizontal viewing angles thanks to its 100% sRGB and IPS characteristics. The screen is also well suited to High Definition content such as videos with its precise Full HD definition and 16: 9 format. Anti-reflective coating, the screen also offers better visibility in a bright environment (eg outdoors) than a shiny panel.
Performance, battery life of the MSI Modern 14 B11SB-050FR
The MSI Modern 14 B11SB-050FR is for those looking for a compact, stylish High Definition laptop PC for everyday versatile use on the go.
Fairly easy to carry due to its compactness, finesse and lightness, this Ultrabook can last around 7 hours on battery life, which is below average but still decent.
In any case, it delivers good general performance able to satisfy a number of users thanks to its core combining a good amount of 16 GB RAM very useful in multitasking with a low consumption Intel Tiger Lake Quad Core i7-1165G7 processor. .
The latter houses within it the Iris Xe graphics part (tested by us) which of course allows you to watch photos and videos but also to play titles that are not too greedy in graphic resources, like the dedicated card which accompanies it, the GeForce MX450.
This NVIDIA Turing GPU is a little more efficient and will therefore be favored by the onboard NVIDIA Optimus technology to perform the heaviest graphics work, but it also consumes more power.
In practice Optimus switches automatically and in real time between the Iris Xe and the GeForce MX450, depending on the tasks performed. She favors the Iris Xe as much as possible because it is energy efficient, which promotes battery life.
However, it should be borne in mind that to often perform work requiring processor and / or graphics resources, it is preferable to turn to a PC based on a non-low consumption processor and / or an appropriate dedicated graphics card.
On the storage side, MSI opts here for an SSD that is less energy consuming than a hard drive but also silent, more robust and much faster.
Concretely thanks to the SSD, we obtain a much better fluidity and responsiveness on a daily basis than with a simple hard drive. Thus, we benefit from much faster software launches as well as start / stop and processing, or even a faster arrival on the cards of online games for example.
With its 512 GB, the onboard SSD offers a capacity in phase with the standard of hard disks. But if you need more space, you can use an external storage unit. Favoring a USB-C / USB 3.0 device then represents an interesting option to take advantage of fast transfers.
