Combining the comfort of a 17-inch format and the elegance of an ultrabook in a pack with mouse and bag, the Asus VivoBook S712JA-AU170T has a few advantages in its pocket. Inside its 2.3 kg silver case, 8 GB of RAM supports a 10th generation Core i5 Quad Core processor as well as fast and good capacity SSD storage (512 GB). Its configuration thus leaves almost no one behind (except players) with its large 17-inch Full HD IPS screen which allows you to work in excellent conditions. In addition, the connection is correct and the keyboard is backlit. Be aware that you should not expect much from its battery life (4 hours at most).

Asus installs its Asus S712JA-AU170T in a compacted chassis, looking big 15 inches. On the front of the stage, its compact 406 x 253 mm format and its thinness of 21 mm which guide it towards a little mobility. Then, the aesthetic opts for an elegant sober and smooth silver on the entire shell, except around the keyboard with an embossed effect, and drawn edges. The assembly is correct even if the plastic predominates and the clean silhouette of the PC is welcome. Note that the keyboard is backlit , a plus for working in a dark environment.
Around the screen, Asus has sought to slightly refine the borders but without being borderless, which does not detract from the charm of the ultrabook. It benefits from a Full HD definition (1920 x 1080 px) which provides a healthy display density for viewing High Definition content in the best conditions. On the other hand, the IPS panel works to open the viewing angles and faithfully reproduce the colors while the matt treatment of the panel acts as a barrier to reflections associated with use in high ambient light. A plus for comfort.
Well distributed, the connection does not do justice to the space offered by this large 17 inches and retains a variety of fairly basic and dated ports. There is an HDMI output, a microSD card reader and three USB Type-A ports, two of which are still limited by the 2.0 standard. A USB Type-C is also part of the game as well as the AC Wifi and Bluetooth 4.1 modules. No fingerprint reader planned on the other hand but a numeric keypad that makes up the backlit keyboard , a plus.
Performance, battery life of the Asus VivoBook S712JA-AU170T
The 10th generation Ice Lake processor will propel the PC into productive spheres. It is a low consumption Quad Core i5-1035G1 which gains a few performance points over its predecessors (i5-8565U Whiskey Lake / i5-10210U Comet Lake) thanks to a finer engraving (10 nm). Essentially, it fully supports everyday use (Web browsing, Office processing, video) and masters a few more demanding applications taking advantage of the multicore architecture (video editing, Photoshop, etc.). Opposite, the 8 GB RAM provides a fluid multitasking environment.
The integrated graphics Intel UHD G1 is comparable to an Intel UHD 620 integrated in the processors of previous generations. It takes care of graphic tasks related to current use and can even support a few occasional games as long as they are not too demanding.
Opposite, the storage is entrusted to a 512 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD which will bring a welcome dose of responsiveness to the system. Compared to a standard mechanical hard drive, is is quieter, more robust and energy efficient, and allows Windows to achieve remarkable smoothness with short load times and zero latency execution. What’s more, its capacity is nothing short of ridiculous and can accommodate a good chunk of your game library although some may not find it sufficient.
Finally, battery life is far from being the strong point of our VivoBook S712JA-AU170T even if its design leaves one dreaming of a little mobility. Its small battery (32 Whr) does not offer much more than 4 hours of battery life in Internet browsing with active Wifi, which is really limited to consider a working day on the go.
