Offered to occasional players who do not have an expandable budget, the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-54-55QU is a 15-inch gaming PC installed in a sleek shell with red accents. Its configuration is articulated around a quad-core Core i5 and a GeForce GTX 1050, allowing versatile operation with a few games from time to time. RAM and storage provide the space and fluidity needed for the system, and the IPS screen is surrounded by thin sidewalls for more immersion. The latter is not vivacious however (60 Hz) and the storage capacity is limited.

Chassis, connectors, screen of the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-54-55QU

Acer has redesigned its Nitro 5 as a whole with a reworked design for more compactness. Goodbye to the wide borders of the previous model, Acer joined the borderless club, making the new Nitro 5 noticeably more compact than its predecessor. But the Nitro retains its DNA with its characteristic red accents applied to the keyboard, the edge of the touchpad and the hinge cover, even the bias is decidedly more discreet with smoother and more sober finishes, most surfaces being in plain and matt plastic. Overall, the Nitro 5 is relatively light for a 15.6-inch gaming laptop with 2.2 kg on the scales. The keyboard is always backlit with red with the ZQSD keys and the highlighted arrows.

The screen is a strength on this Nitro AN515-54-55QU, at least for moviegoers. Because players may see with a bad eye the lack of responsiveness of the panel. The IPS technology is still to provide a clear picture and rich colors, whatever your position in front of the screen and the definition Full HD (1920 x 1080 px) display a high density. You will be able to take full advantage of your High Definition content and modulate the positioning of windows without losing readability. In addition, the anti-reflection treatment plays a decisive role if you are installed in a very bright environment, made it a barrier to reflections.

Connectivity has also changed, but not necessarily in the right direction. Acer replaced one of the two USB 2.0 ports with a USB 3.0 port, but inexplicably removed the card reader. Likewise, Acer continues to provide a combined 3.5mm jack rather than dedicated audio and mic inputs. In addition, there is only an HDMI 2.0 port for video output and no USB 3.1 Gen2 or Thunderbolt 3 port, only a USB Type-C Gen1 port. The RJ45 port is always there, a good point, as well as the latest generation wireless modules Wifi ac and Bluetooth 5.0.

Performances, autonomy of the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-54-55QU

The component in the spotlight is the 9th generation Coffee Lake Refresh Quad Core i5-9300H processor . It gains significantly in power compared to its predecessor (i5-8300H) but not enough to mark a notable difference, however. In short, this translates into a complete management of the versatile use composed of video editing, 3D rendering, programming or light parallelization (Lightroom). The 8 GB RAM ensures a fluid environment in multitasking.

Acer has equipped the Nitro 5 AN515-54-55QU with a 57 Whr battery which allows it to offer a battery life of 7 hours in web browsing with active Wifi, an impressive total for a gaming PC. It should also be noted that the Nitro 5 retains about 80% of its battery performance . This 20% reduction should not significantly affect the quality of play.

The graphics part is entrusted to the GeForce GTX 1050 (3 GB GDDR5) , a dedicated graphics card of mid-range old generation. Designed for the occasional game, it allows you to play all the titles of the moment in Full HD with a level of details set to Medium or High. But do not expect to push the details on “Ultra” in Full HD and even less play in 4K. Note that it is also a definite support in the exploitation of programs taking advantage of the graphics card to speed up processing (3D).

Finally, storage comes last in our argument. On the Nitro 5 AN515-54-55QU, it is only entrusted to a dedicated 256 GB SSD (NVMe PCIe) . If this solution is privileged for its reactivity and for the fluidity that it offers to Windows 10 as well as for its silent, robust and energy-saving side, its capacity is limited here and will not be able to accommodate all your toy library in addition to the system of / Recovery and programs. A 2.5 inch location is logically free inside but it is unclear whether it is well equipped.
