Aesthetically close to its predecessors (AN515-51, AN515-41), the Acer Nitro AN515-42-R6Y5 opts for a rather massive silhouette characterized by its 26.7 mm thick and 2.7 kg on the scale. The design is deliberately racy with a hull with marked lines and structured profile all dressed in black, awakened by an imposing red matte hinge . The case is made entirely of plastic (unlike the AN515-51 which had a metal cover) but the surfaces have a fiber composite finish that marks less fingerprints. The keyboard is backlit with red on a nuance with the ZQSD keys highlighted but lacks luster, as on his cousin under Intel.
This is rather surprising for a PC game and more for an architecture AMD but the autonomy of this PC should be around a satisfactory total of 6 hours in current use (light).
It is at the level of performance that we expect this Acer Nitro 5 AN515-42-R6Y5 at the turn. Built around a low power Ryzen 7 Quad Core and 8GB of RAM , the PC is doing very well with office and multimedia tasks, leaving a little room for versatility with video editing missions and a little calculation and what is needed for fluidity in multitasking . FYI, we compare the capabilities of this Ryzen 7 to those of a Quad Core i5 Whiskey Lake from Intel.
Although the processor-integrated Radeon RX Vega 10 provides much more than Intel’s HD graphics chips in many cases, players will be satisfied with the presence of a “real” graphics card. The AMD Radeon RX 560X Polaris will only be used when needed and will rise to the same level as an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 to ensure the game in Full HD in good conditions with details set to High or Medium.
The screen is another strength of this PC. Thanks to IPS technology , you enjoy a consistent image with rich colors regardless of your position in front of the screen and a high display density thanks to Full HD (1920 x 1080 px). This definition allows you to fully enjoy your High Definition content and to modulate the positioning of windows without losing legibility. In addition, the antireflection treatment plays a decisive role if you are installed in a very bright environment, was a barrier to glare.
Then let’s look at a welcome element of reactivity: hybrid storage. This solution composed of a dedicated SSD of 128 GB and a hard disk of 1000 GB will be decisive point of view reactivity. In principle, the SSD will be able to host the operating system and programs while the hard drive takes care of the storage of your toy library, thus ensuring effective overall performance, rapid turn-on / turn-off and copies of data to accelerated flow rates.
Finally, the connection is unchanged from the old models and remains classic. There are three Type-A USB ports, including a single USB 3.0, a USB Type-Cport (without Thunderbolt 3 support), an HDMI output, an SD card reader and an audio output. Most interfaces are positioned on the left side. Recent versions of WiFi AC and Bluetooth 4.1 modules are also on the menu.
