Thin and light for a 17-inch laptop, the versatile Asus VivoBook 17 S1704ZA-AU252W laptop with a 7-hour battery life suitable for some students with an anti-glare Full HD IPS panel performs well in everyday use, light multimedia processing and modest gaming thanks to its hybrid Intel Alder Lake Core i7-1255U processor with Iris Xe graphics and its 16 GB of RAM. But also its fast SSD storage of 512 GB which boosts its responsiveness. This sleek Windows 11 silver Ultrabook is relatively thin and light and is also equipped with USB-C connectivity and a webcam shutter.

Chassis, connectors, display of Asus VivoBook 17 S1704ZA-AU252W
With its slim and light light silver design in a comfortable 180° openable form factor totally flat certified to the US military ruggedness standard MIL-STD-810H, this versatile laptop can be recharged to 60% in 49 minutes and has a sleek and discreet look.
This laptop is equipped with USB-C connectivity, its practical HDMI video output to easily connect this PC to a TV or monitor for example, its audio port or its 3 USBs compatible with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, USB 3.0 ensuring transfers up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 if USB 3.0 devices are plugged in.
Wireless connectivity, on the other hand, disappoints since there are Wi-Fi 5 ac and Bluetooth 5.1 wireless modules for remote connections and communications, Wi-Fi 6 ax being more recent and powerful.
Another disappointment: a priori the keyboard does not have a backlighting solution for the keys.
The webcam can be covered by a shutter when not in use to protect privacy, a nice feature.
The screen is suitable for High Definition content such as videos thanks to its Full HD definition and 16:9 format.
Its anti-reflective coating also makes it more readable than a glossy panel in bright environments (e.g. outdoors) and less tiring for the eyes in the long run, while its horizontal and vertical viewing angles are important thanks to its IPS technology. It’s a shame that this one isn’t top-of-the-range: the colorimetry is classic.
Asus VivoBook 17 S1704ZA-AU252W performance, battery life
The Asus VivoBook 17 S1704ZA-AU252W is a large-format laptop meant for everyday all-round use.
Despite its large, comfortable size, not the most nomadic by nature, it is relatively thin and its weight is contained. As a result, it can still be transported without much worry. Some looking for a 17-inch student laptop may therefore be interested, knowing that its battery life is around 7 hours on battery in light use.
Obviously, in order to consume as little energy as possible while ensuring good responsiveness, the storage is entrusted to an SSD.
As a reminder, an SSD consumes less energy than an HDD while being more robust, quieter and much faster.
In particular, the SSD provides faster start-ups/shutdowns, processing and application launches than a hard drive or even a faster arrival on the maps of online games.
Be careful, however: as there is no dedicated graphics card on board, demanding players will miss out. On the other hand, this versatile laptop will be of interest to those who are content with light to modest games or watching HD photos and videos.
How? Thanks to the services of the Iris Xe graphics solution. It is inserted directly into the processor, an Intel Alder Lake-U with 10 hybrid cores. It’s the low-power Core i7-1255U, coupled here with 16GB of RAM.
Many users will appreciate that this core delivers very good performance in everyday use, including small multimedia processing that takes advantage of multi-core and RAM, such as light video encodings or photo editing.
What about storage capacity? The SSD offers 512 GB, which is equivalent to the standard for hard drives and what many laptops on the market offer.
However, if you need extra space, you can expand the capacity with the help of an external storage device, preferably USB 3.0/USB-C for fast transfers.
