This is a PC built for intensive gaming and for productivity that will seduce more than one. For less than 1300 euros, this large format PC contains a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Turing, a high-end graphics card close to the level of an RTX 2060 (without Ray Tracing) allowing to launch all AAA titles, but also a Hexa Core Powerful i7 supported by a large amount of RAM (16 GB) and a solid capacity SSD storage for system responsiveness. Robust and with a rather unique design in a racy style, the metal chassis updates a borderless Full HD IPS mat screen of fairly good quality that can open 180 degrees, a plus. On the other hand, the connection is correct, the keyboard backlit in white and the weight well optimized. However, the screen is not very vivid (60 Hz),

Chassis, connectors, screen of the Lenovo Legion Y540-17IRH (81Q4009BFR)
For 2019, HP has redesigned its high-end Legion in all subtlety. Indeed, the Lenovo Legion Y540-17IRH (81Q4009BFR) preserves the aesthetics observed on the Legion Y530 of previous generation. Its aluminum case plays the card of sobriety with smooth and matt black surfaces all around. Basically, the Lenovo Legion Y540 is serious at the front and fun at the rear. Its cover houses a shiny Legion logo while the back of the base is much more intimidating with its profusion of multicolored LEDS and its geometric silhouette.
Then let\’s talk about the 17.3 inch screen which has something to attract even if its lack of responsiveness may discourage some (60 Hz). Highlighted by a very thin frame, it is installed on an IPS panel with wide viewing angles. Full HD definition (1920 x 1080 px) is the most suitable for players and allows you to make the most of your High Definition content while the mat processing prevents ambient light from being reflected on the screen, improving comfort. of play (especially in dark scenes).
The Legion Y540-17IRH\’s connectors are mainly assembled on the rear. Only 2 USB 3.1 ports cover the sides. The rear brings everything else together: a mini DisplayPort, an HDMI 2.0 port, a third USB 3.1 port, a USB Type-C port, an RJ45 Ethernet port, the power outlet and a lock. The proposed interfaces are worthy of a gaming PC at this level even if the card reader is absent and the Thunderbolt 3 not on the program. The wireless modules offer Wifi ac and Bluetooth 4.2.
Note, like the Y530 and Y740 and some other competitors on the market (notably at Asus), Lenovo slipped the webcam under the screen to heal the “wow” effect of the borderless screen. This positioning gives rise to an unflattering angle of view, to be taken into consideration therefore if you are required to carry out videoconferences regularly.
Performance, autonomy of the Lenovo Legion Y540-17IRH (81Q4009BFR)
Gifted for gaming, the Turing GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics card places the PC on a high-end level. If the latter only supports Ray-Tracing in small proportions unlike its big sister RTX 2060, the GTX 1660 Ti follows the latter in most performance question scenarios. In fact, it is particularly capable of competing with intensive players and ensuring optimal frequencies in 1080p High on all AAA games with a total of FPS that exceeds 60. Support for creatives is also precious with its 6 Go VRAM GDDR6 .
Next comes the very heart of this PC and its 9th generation processor Hexa Core i7-9750H Coffee Lake Refresh . The gain compared to the previous generation is not necessarily significant performance issue but it still allows to glimpse large resources in multicore tasks, in the service of versatility. Indeed, its 6 cores (12 logic in multi-threading) are precious when you work on greedy applications such as 3D modeling, parallelization, video editing … Especially since the RAM is present in quantity. With 16 GB of RAM , you have scope in multitasking and what to see coming the next years serenely.
Storage is another strength in this Legion Y540-17IRH since it is entrusted to a 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD which will significantly improve the overall reactivity of the system on a daily basis. Overall quieter, robust and energy efficient than a mechanical disk, it allows Windows to reach a remarkable level of fluidity with short loading times and execution without latencies. What is more, its capacity is not ridiculous and can accommodate a good part of your toy library even if some will not find it sufficient.
Even for a gaming laptop, the battery life of the Legion Y540-17IRH is not satisfactory with barely 4 hours of web browsing under Wifi totaled on battery.
Finally, note that this PC is supplied with FreeDos, a utility that does not allow optimal use of all of its capacities. It will therefore be necessary to install a complete operating system such as Linux or Windows to benefit from a perfectly functional environment.
