At CES 2022 Dell announced 2 new gaming laptops, the Alienware m15 R7 and Alienware m17 R5, equipped with a latest generation AMD Rembrandt processor with NVIDIA Ampere or AMD RDNA2 graphics card, screen up to 4K and 360Hz, SSD storage up to 4 TB or Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, all under Windows 11.
The Alienware m17 R5 is based on a next-generation AMD Rembrandt APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) Octo Core processor, Ryzen 7 6800H (3.2 GHz), Ryzen 9 6900HX (3.3 GHz) or Ryzen 9 6980HX (3.3 GHz), all with Radeon RDNA2 integrated graphics solution.
Several dedicated graphics card options are planned, either NVIDIA Ampere GeForce RTX 3050 Ti 4 GB GDDR6 dedicated (805W, boost 1695MHz) or GeForce RTX 3060 6 GB GDDR6 (115W, boost 1702MHz) or GeForce RTX 3000 more recent, or AMD RDNA2 Radeon RX 6700M 10 GB GDDR6 (135W) or Radeon RX 6850M XT 12 GB GDDR6 (175W).
NVIDIA Optimus and AMD SmartShift Max technologies are part of the game for real-time automatic switching between the integrated graphics solution and the dedicated graphics card as needed.
At the heart of this gaming laptop also take place up to 64 GB DDR5 4800MHz of RAM (2 slots) as well as 2 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD storage slots accepting a 256 GB SSD to 4 TB (2 x 2 TB max in RAID).
The Alienware m17 R5 also integrates Wi-Fi 6 ax (2×2, Mediatek MT7921) or Wi-Fi 6E ax (2×2, Qualcomm WCN6856), Bluetooth 5.2, HDMI 2.1, audio combo Headphone / Microphone, Gigabit Ethernet (Realtek RTL811H-CG 1 Gb/s with RTX 3050 Ti, Realtek RTL8124BGS 2.5 Gb/s with other GPUs), 3 USB 3.2 (Gen1, 1 PowerShare), 1 USB 3.2 Type-C (Gen2, only RTX 3050 Ti) or 1 USB 4 Type-C (other GPUs).
Cooling is provided by an Alienware Cryo-Tech Cooling solution with copper heat pipes and air outlets but also optional steam chamber (only for editions with Ryzen 9 and RX 6850M XT).
On the display side, there is a 17.3-inch anti-glare comfortView Plus IPS Full HD (1920×1080) 165Hz 3ms 300cd/m² 100% sRGB AMD FreeSync G-Sync Optimus, or IPS Full HD 360Hz 1ms 300cd/m² 100% sRGB AMD FreeSync G-Sync Optimus or IPS 4K Ultra HD (3840×2160) 120Hz 3ms 500cd/m² 100% AdobeRGB AMD FreeSync AMD SmartAccess.
Above the screen is a 720p HD webcam, with optional for 360Hz and 4K panel editions an Infrared webcam allowing biometric authentication by facial recognition via Windows Hello technology.
There are also speakers and a backlit RGB 1 zone AlienFX chiclet keyboard as standard (1.8mm stroke) or optional RGB backlit by N-Key Rollover key or cherryMX mechanical keyboard with switches backlit by N-Key Rollover key. Note the absence of anumeric keypad,rare in this format while this feature is standard from 15 inches.
The new multimedia laptop the Alienware m17 R5 targeting gamers weighs 3.3 Kg and measures 397.3 x 298.71 x 14.62-26.7 mm. It adopts a Dark Side of the Moon design and runs on Windows 11 with a 64Whr Li-Ion battery as standard and high capacity 97Whr as an option.
Dell informs us that its Alienware m17 R5 will be available in the spring of 2022 from 1599 dollars.
Its little brother Alienware m15 R7 in a more compact 15-inch format is also expected for the spring from 1499 dollars.
If Dell does not communicate for the moment on its specifications, they should be close to that of the 17-inch edition.
